The People of the Georgetown are farmers, teachers, police and correctional officers; Professionals, Laborers, Students, Retirees... the list goes on and on. Georgetown's diversity lend to a multitude of issues in our town.
Growth:
Smart growth is important to any town. The residents of Georgetown spoke in a survey conducted by the University of Delaware in asking for certain establishments. At the top of the list were:
- Movie Theater
- Grocery Stores
- Clothing & Shoe Stores
- Books & Music Stores
I believe the Town needs to active and aggressively recruit these and more business to the Georgetown area. How? By showing developers the value of our community. By working with Georgetown's Planning & Zoning commission, DelDOT, DNREC, Office of State Planning, and any other agency to make sure roadblocks are removed.
I believe that Georgetown needs to be friendlier to companies that are seeking to invest in these types of businesses. Accelerated application and review processes, phased-in permitting and impact fee schedules are just the beginning; the town needs to have a "whatever it takes" attitude to business growth!
Immigration:
Georgetown has become home to a large Hispanic population. Most of the Hispanic Population currently in town are here legally; they have gone through the necessary federal processes to be here. I welcome them to our town, and I encourage them to work and thrive in our community. I also welcome them to know our heritage and culture. Persons who are in the United States illegally have no place in our town. Allowing illegals in our town diminishes the hard work and great amount of effort that others have put forth to be here legally. Immigration has historically been an issue dealt with by the Federal Government, and I feel that is is best handled by them.
Spending:
I know times are tough for families. I have a wife and a young daughter to think about. The last thing I want to see is for taxes and fees to increase. That is why I have always looked for and supported smarter ways of doing things in our town. The time for big spending has ended, and we need to continue to look for ways to stretch your tax dollars.
Safety:
We all want to live in a town that is safe. Georgetown has the best municipal police officers in the state; hands down. I will do my best to make sure that Georgetown maintains the best equipped, best trained, and best supported police force in Delaware.
